WOW! It’s our 10th year of hosting Block Parties in Tacony Creek Park! This year’s parties were filled with adventure, family, and environmental education. Tacony Creek Park welcomed about 300 attendees at our Block Parties on June 14, 15, and 16.

¡WOW! ¡Es nuestro décimo año organizando Block Parties en Tacony Creek Park! Las fiestas de este año estuvieron llenas de aventura, familia y educación ambiental. Tacony Creek Park dio la bienvenida a unos 300 participantes en nuestros Block Parties los días 14, 15 y 16 de junio.

Each night saw many highlights, including intriguing activities for family members of all ages, and excited representatives of community organizations sharing their mission, resources, and educational wisdom. These parties are all about seeing old friends and making new ones and demonstrating the incredible asset that is Tacony Creek Park.

Hubo muchos aspectos destacados cada noche, incluyendo actividades intrigantes para miembros de la familia de todas las edades y representantes entusiasmados de organizaciones comunitarias que compartieron su misión, recursos y sabiduría educativa. Estas fiestas tienen que ver con encontrarse con viejos amigos y hacer nuevas amistades, y demostrar el increíble beneficio que es Tacony Creek Park.

A popular activity for families and their kids was the Foraging/Aqua Marooned walks! Led by MyKyah, previous TTF Alliance for Watershed Education (AWE) Fellow, participants learned about the plants in Tacony Creek Park that are edible, non-edible, dangerous, and some that can be used for tending to wounds or bug bites. Some of these plants include Greater Burdock and Common Mugwort! Learn more about these plants in our TTF Watershed Foraging Guide. 

¡Una actividad popular para las familias y sus hijos fueron las caminatas Foraging/Aqua Marooned! Dirigidos por MyKyah, miembro anterior del TTF Watershed Foraging Guide.  (AWE) Fellow de TTF, los participantes aprendieron sobre las plantas en Tacony Creek Park que son comestibles, no comestibles, peligrosas y algunas que pueden usarse para curar heridas o picaduras de insectos. ¡Algunas de estas plantas incluyen la bardana mayor y la artemisa común! Heidie Mojica from Aqua Marooned! led part of the walk in which kids got to explore nature, and find natural treasures in the park based on Aqua Marooned mission signs at locations along the trail. The missions motivated young minds to search for leaves of a certain shape, mimic bird calls, and find the closest body of water (Tacony Creek). Aqua Marooned! is an environmental game developed by Swim Pony specifically for Tacony Creek Park and other Alliance for Watershed Education Centers. The game encourages participants to creatively explore their natural surroundings using playful and engaging prompts.

¡Heidie Mojica de Aqua Marooned!  dirigió parte de la caminata en la que los niños pudieron explorar la naturaleza, y encontrar tesoros naturales en el parque según los letreros de la misión de Aqua Marooned en lugares a lo largo del sendero. ¡Las misiones motivaron a las mentes jóvenes a buscar hojas de cierta forma, imitar los cantos de los pájaros y encontrar el cuerpo de agua más cercano (Tacony Creek) Aqua Marooned! es un juego ambiental desarrollado por Swim Pony específicamente para Tacony Creek Park y otros centros educativos del Alliance for Watershed Education. El juego invita a los participantes a explorar creativamente su entorno natural mediante indicaciones divertidas e interactivas.

Another exciting park adventure — an engaging bird walk — was led by (our hero) Bernard Brown. Adults and youth used binoculars to spot the birds! Bernard encouraged the children to listen closely — birds that were heard included a Grey Catbird and a Wood Thrush (considered to have one of the prettiest bird calls). Other birds observed were: American Robins, Cedar Waxwings, Chimney Swifts, Carolina Wren and a Northern Cardinal. 

Otra emocionante aventura en el parque — un paseo de aves — fue dirigida por (nuestro héroe) Bernard Brown. ¡Los adultos y los jóvenes usaron binoculares para ver las aves! Bernard animó a los niños a escuchar con atención: las aves que se escucharon incluyeron un Maullador gris y un Zorzal maculado (considerado como uno de los cantos de pájaros más bonitos). Otras aves observadas: Mirlo primaveras, Ampelis chinito, Vencejo de chimenea, Saltapared de carolina y un Cardenal norteño.

The Academy of Natural Sciences brought a Madagascar hissing cockroach (one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 5 to 7.5 centimeters), and a turtle shell!

El Academy of Natural Sciences trajo una cucaracha silbadora de Madagascar (una de las especies de cucarachas más grandes, que alcanza de 5 a 7.5 centímetros) y un caparazón de tortuga.

REI’s table was very popular with the camping set! The REI team came all three nights and shared very popular sunglasses, bandanas, and food samples including a specialty chili. This was the first year REI joined us, and we were thrilled!

¡La mesa de REI fue muy popular con el set de campamento! El equipo de REI vino las tres noches y compartió anteojos de sol, pañuelos y muestras de alimentos muy populares, incluido un chile especial. Este fue el primer año que REI se unió a nosotros, ¡y estábamos encantados!

The Block Parties were all about loving trails and getting around sustainably.  Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia led short bike rides for adults and children along the trail, providing helmets and educational material in English and Spanish. They were joined by The Circuit Trails to share the latest information on the expanding regional trail network, host games with giveaways, and provide information about Circuit Trail exploration opportunities in Philadelphia and the region. The Circuit Trails was audibly exciting! They had a fun game of Jenga with large blocks; as people successfully removed the blocks from the Jenga tower, loud cheers could be heard by all attendees. Clean Air Council/GoPhilly Go provided materials on Philly’s recreational amenities and traffic safety, including information on city services and how to decrease air pollution in your home. They also played games with guests demonstrating how to get to other trails and park sites in the city. Our friend Independence Youth Cycling encouraged more kids to get on bikes in and around Tacony Creek Park!

Los Block Parties tenían que ver con amar los senderos y moverse de manera sostenible. Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia dirigió paseos cortos en bicicleta para adultos y niños a lo largo del sendero, proporcionando cascos y material educativo en inglés y español. A ellos se unió Circuit Trails para compartir la información más reciente sobre la red regional de senderos en expansión, organizar juegos con obsequios y brindar información sobre las oportunidades de exploración de Circuit Trail en Filadelfia y la región. ¡El Circuit Trails fue audiblemente emocionante! Center for Aquatic Sciences brought live animals: Monty the Snake and Angie the Turtle, who had white skin with a mix of stripes and black dots on her skin! These creatures drew in many excited children!

Fairmount Water Works/Philadelphia Water Department/Let’s Go Outdoors displayed a captivating row house model that allowed guests to explore the difference between light showers, rainstorms, and Green Stormwater techniques for slowing the flow of water to our creeks.

Fairmount Water Works/Philadelphia Water Department/Let’s Go Outdoors mostró un cautivador modelo de casa adosada que permitió a los invitados explorar la diferencia entre lluvias ligeros, tormentas y técnicas de aguas pluviales verdes para reducir el flujo de agua a nuestros arroyos.

Sierra Club shared information about safety in the outdoors. Rebecca Deegan taught children how to protect themselves against ticks and how to find them on their skin! She used a marker to draw a dot on their skin while their eyes were closed so that they could practice a full body scan to find the “tick.” The kids loved this activity! She also taught about common outdoor risks such as sunburn, ticks, and blisters, and handed out free supplies like bug spray and sunscreen to keep you safe all year round.

Sierra Club compartió información sobre seguridad al aire libre. ¡Rebecca Deegan enseñó a los niños cómo protegerse contra las garrapatas y cómo encontrarlas en la piel! Ella usó un marcador para dibujar un punto en su piel mientras sus ojos estaban cerrados para que pudieran practicar un escaneo de cuerpo completo para encontrar la “garrapata”. ¡A los niños les encantó esta actividad! También enseñó sobre los riesgos comunes al aire libre, como quemaduras solares, garrapatas y ampollas, y entregó suministros gratuitos como repelente de insectos y protector solar para mantenerlo seguro durante todo el año.

TreePhilly hosted a tree art-making craft in which kids could make a leaf rubbing and learn about the wonders of nature. They also gave away 25 FREE Trees for Philly residents to take home and plant in their yard. SWEEP Philadelphia (Streets & Walkways Education and Enforcement Program) gave away free recycling bins as they do for almost every annual Block Party, thank you, Streets Philly!

TreePhilly organizó una manualidad de árboles en la que los niños podían copiar una hoja y aprender sobre las maravillas de la naturaleza. También regalaron 25 árboles GRATIS para que los residentes de Filadelfia se los llevaran a casa y los plantaran en su jardín.  SWEEP Philadelphia (Programa de Educación y Cumplimiento de Calles y Pasarelas) regaló contenedores de reciclaje gratis como hacen todos los años, ¡gracias, Street Philly!

Of course, TTF hosted our classic arts and crafts table, where children painted fish and made environment/watershed-related buttons! We would like to give a shoutout to Jay Coreano, who always brings life to the park through his art. Thank you to Julia and Akayla Morris, Nelson, Griffen, and Sammy as well for hosting the art table and bringing joy to the children.
